ABOUT
In an era of climate change and population growth, delivering clean water, sustainable energy, a clean environment and public health are major challenges for the engineering and scientific communities. Membrane and Nano Technologies have significant roles to play in providing solutions to these problems. These technologies can help us to safely reuse/reclaim wastewater, desalinate brackish or seawater, provide renewable energy and improve water quality by removing emerging contaminants and pathogens.
At Oregon State University, we are exploring both the fundamental science and the practical application of membrane and nanotechnologies in environmental engineering. We have a range of exciting opportunities, including:
Understanding and modelling transport phenomena through pressure-driven and osmotically driven membrane separation processes applied for water and energy sustainability
Fundamental studies of membrane fouling, scaling and cleaning
Development of hybrid membrane filtration systems to include renewable energies in water treatment
Synthesis, characterization and development of membrane materials for water purification and renewable energy production
Novel applications of nanomaterials for advanced water treatment
Advanced technologies for water treatment, converting waste into valuable-added products and clean energy production with particular emphasis on algae-based bioenergy

Given the multidisciplinary nature of this research theme, graduate students from a variety of disciplines including (but not limited to) environmental engineering, biological engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, material science and molecular microbiology are welcome to apply for postgraduate research studies.
